Ancestor Season: Ways to Honor the People Who Came Before You

There is a hush that falls over the veil this time of year. You feel it before you can name it. The light softens earlier in the evening, the wind carries a different kind of memory, and something ancient inside your bones begins to stir and remember itself. This is Ancestor Season. It is not marked on any calendar, yet every cell in your body knows when it has arrived. Our ancestors are not gone. They are woven into the marrow of who we are, humming quietly beneath our thoughts, waiting patiently to be invited back into conversation. When we forget them, we forget a piece of our own medicine. When we remember them, we remember ourselves. Here are sacred ways to open the door and let them in.

Build a Small Altar

You do not need anything elaborate, just grab a single candle, a photograph, a handful of dried flowers, a cup of water. Place these items somewhere quiet and speak softly to whoever comes to mind. Grandmothers, grandfathers, those you never met but somehow still miss. Let the altar be a doorway, not a decoration.

Cook Something They Loved

Food is one of the oldest languages of remembrance. Prepare a dish that carries the scent of your lineage, something your grandmother made on Sunday mornings or your father loved on cold nights. As you cook, let your hands move slowly. You are not just making a meal. You are calling spirits home through smell and warmth and love.

Speak Their Names Aloud

Names hold power. When we speak the names of those who came before us, we pull them gently from the mist and remind the universe that they mattered, that they lived, that they still matter now. Whisper their names into candlelight. Let your voice be the bridge between worlds.

Write a Letter to the Lineage

Take a quiet moment with pen and paper. Write to your ancestors as though they are sitting beside you, because in many ways they are. Tell them what has changed, what you have healed, what you carry forward in their honor.

Walk in Nature and Listen

Ancestors often speak through wind, through birdsong, through the sudden stillness of a forest path. Take a slow walk with no destination and simply listen. You may feel a shift in temperature, a flicker of memory, a wave of unexplainable emotion. Trust it. This is how spirit often chooses to speak.

Cleanse Your Space and Your Energy

Before deep ancestral work, clear the air around you. Palo santo, sage, or simply open windows and fresh water can shift stagnant energy and create room for spirit to move freely. A clean space invites a clean connection.

Honor the Pain As Well As the Beauty

Not every ancestor lived an easy life. Some carried grief, trauma, and heartbreak that echoes even now in our own patterns. Part of honoring them is having compassion for their struggles and choosing, in this lifetime, to transmute what once caused pain into something softer, wiser, and more whole. This is soul level healing, and it ripples backward and forward through the entire family line.

Sit in Silence and Simply Receive

Sometimes the most powerful ritual is stillness. Light a candle, close your eyes, and simply be present. You may not hear words. You may only feel warmth, a subtle nudge, a wave of peace. Even this small invocation is connection and communication.

Ancestor Season asks us to slow down and remember that we did not arrive here alone. We are the living continuation of countless stories, struggles, prayers, and dreams. When we honor those who came before us, we do not just look backward. We strengthen the thread that carries us forward, and we prepare the ground for those who will one day call us ancestor too. May you walk gently this season, with your lineage beside you and your heart wide open.

Take care,

Bijou
