Protecting Your Energy Without Closing Your Heart

There is a question I have been asked more than almost any other by those who come to work with me. How do I protect myself from the world without losing the very thing that makes me who I am. They have often already tried closing off, and it has left them feeling safer in body but strangely hollow in spirit, as though they traded their aliveness for their armor. I understand this trade, because I made it myself once. Early in my walk, I believed that sensitivity was a wound to be healed by hardening. I built walls I thought were wisdom. What I found instead was a kind of quiet exile from my own gifts. The same openness that let suffering reach me was the same openness that let love, beauty, and spirit reach me too. I could not seal one door without sealing the other.

The Difference Between Protection and Armor

Protection and armor are often mistaken for the same thing, but they are not. Armor is rigid. It does not distinguish between what threatens you and what nourishes you. It simply blocks everything equally, and over time it grows heavy, cutting you off not only from harm but from connection itself.

True protection moves differently. It is more like the skin of a living thing than the shell of a dead one. Skin senses. It responds. It lets warmth in and keeps true danger out, adjusting constantly rather than staying locked in one defensive position forever. This is the kind of protection spirit has taught me to seek, one that remains alive and responsive rather than frozen shut.

Why the Heart Was Never Meant to Be Sealed

In every tradition I have studied, the heart is understood as a threshold, not a fortress. It is the place where the inner world meets the outer world, where spirit and matter touch. To seal this threshold entirely is to cut yourself off from the very exchange your soul came here to have. I have sat with many gifted healers and empaths who believed their sensitivity was a flaw needing correction. What I have found instead, again and again, is that sensitivity is often the very gift that makes their healing work possible. The same heart that feels another's pain deeply is the heart capable of holding that pain with true compassion. Closing this heart to protect it does not preserve the gift. It smothers it.

Grounding as the First True Protection

Before any energetic shielding, before any ritual of protection, the most powerful practice I return to again and again is simple grounding. A tree does not fear the storm because its roots reach deep into soil that the wind cannot touch. Its branches may bend and shake, but its foundation remains steady.

Spend time daily with bare feet on earth if you are able. Breathe slowly into the base of your spine and imagine roots extending downward, further than any storm above could disturb. When you are grounded fully, you no longer need to close your heart to feel safe, because your safety no longer depends on holding everything out. It depends on being anchored steadily enough to let things move through you without uprooting you.

Discernment as Protection, Not Fear

Much of what people call energetic protection is really discernment wearing a different name. You do not need to close your heart to every person, every situation, every energy that enters your life. You need only to discern honestly which of these deserve your full openness and which deserve a more careful distance. This means learning to notice, before you give your energy fully, whether what stands before you asks for reciprocity or simply asks to take. It means trusting your body's quiet signals, a tightening in the chest, a subtle exhaustion after certain conversations, as sacred information rather than something to override in the name of being kind. Discernment lets you remain open in general while still protecting yourself in the particular.

A Practice for Opening Protection

When I sit in ceremony with those seeking this balance, I often guide them through a simple practice. Place a hand over the heart and breathe until it feels warm rather than tight. Imagine the heart not as a door swinging fully open or fully shut, but as something more like a breathing membrane, capable of widening in the presence of true connection and gently narrowing in the presence of harm, always moving, never frozen in one position. Ask this heart what it needs today, not what it should perform for others, not what would make you seem strong or spiritually advanced, simply what it authentically needs in this moment. Some days it may need to open fully, wildly, without caution. Other days it may need a quieter, more guarded softness. Both are valid expressions of the same living heart.

Releasing What Does Not Belong to You

Part of true energetic protection is remembering that you are not required to carry every emotion, every burden, every story that crosses your path. Empathy does not mean absorption. You can feel deeply for someone's suffering without taking that suffering into your own body as though it were yours to solve or hold indefinitely. At the end of each day, I recommend a simple release. Breathe out slowly and imagine returning to others what belongs to them, their grief, their fear, their unfinished lessons, blessing it as you release it rather than resenting it. It's not concidered as coldness. It is respect, both for yourself and for the truth that each soul must ultimately walk its own path.

Living With an Open, Protected Heart

The goal was never to choose between safety and openness. The goal is to discover that true safety makes deeper openness possible, because a heart that is well rooted, well discerned, and well tended no longer needs walls to survive the world. It can meet life fully, feel deeply, love without hesitation, and still remain whole, because its protection lives not in distance from the world but in a steady, rooted relationship with itself. This is the quiet work of a lifetime, learning to stay open without losing yourself, learning to protect your energy without ever mistaking your heart for something that needs to be sealed away in order to be safe.

Take care,

Bijou
